Tungabhadra Board (TBBOARD) is an Inter-State project (States comprising Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Telangana) aimed at harnessing the waters of the Tungabhadra River for various purposes including irrigation, hydro-electricity generation, fisheries, and tourism development.

Tungabhadra Board was constituted on 29th September 1953 by the President of India with effect from 1st  October 1953 under sub-section (4) of Section 66 of the Andhra State Act 1953 (30 of 1953).

  1. What are the main responsibilities of the Tungabhadra Board?

The main functions of the Tungabhadra Board are the Regulation of supplies of water to the Member States in accordance to KWDT award, Maintenance of the Dam and Reservoir viz., right portion of the Dam (0 to 3069.67 ft) and 33 spillway gates including safety aspects of the Dam and spillway, Maintenance of Right Bank High-Level Canal, Power Canal and Low-Level Canal including common distributaries of Right Bank Low-Level Canal, Regulation of Power from the right-bank powerhouses, Maintenance of two powerhouses on the right-bank including renovation and refurbishing, Granting of leases of fisheries in the reservoir and in the main canal, proper utilization of land acquired for the purposes of the Project, any other function incidental to or connected with the functions specified above.

For carrying out its various functions, the Tungabhadra Board has been divided into two main Wings – Irrigation Wing (IW) & Hydro Electric Wing (HEW). Besides the above, the Tungabhadra Board comprises a Fisheries Wing, a Garden Unit, a Health & Medical Unit, and a Security Section.

The Irrigation Wing of the Tungabhadra Board is responsible for the maintenance of the Dam, TB Reservoir, and Canals, ensuring the efficient utilization of water resources for agricultural & drinking purposes.

  1. Does the Tungabhadra Board generate electricity?

Yes, the Tungabhadra Hydro Electric Scheme (TBHES) of Tungabhadra Board utilizes the impounded water in the Tungabhadra Reservoir to generate Hydro-electric power through two powerhouses, one on the right bank at the foot of the Dam and another at Hampi, located 21 km from the Dam. This power generated is shared between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in the ratio of 20:80.

  1. Does the Tungabhadra Board promote fisheries development?

Yes, the Tungabhadra Board has established a fish farm for producing quality fish seeds for raising fishery wealth in the Tungabhadra reservoir and for sale to Government and private agencies in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. In addition, for the convenience of the fishermen of the area to facilitate the preservation of fish catch, the Board is also running an Ice Plant.

Yes, the Tungabhadra Board has developed parks, gardens, and tourist attractions downstream of the Dam area which is the main source of attraction for the tourists/visitors, who are visiting TB Dam. It is one of the oldest and biggest existing gardens since 1956 in the North Karnataka area. The Garden Unit (GU) under the Irrigation Wing is in charge of all Horticulture activities in the Dam area, colonies, and canal banks under the jurisdiction of the TB Board.
